Energy Storage Systems

The bridge between generating electricity from wind or solar to consuming electricity on cloudy or windless day is storage.  The industry has been working on affordable energy storage solutions and devices for decades.  It has not been until recently that increased demand for solar and wind systems has resulted in prices of electricity storage systems to drop significantly.

Below is a chart depicting the expected explosive growth to energy storage deployment.  While the utility companies were the first to deploy these systems, residential is expected to be a new source of demand.  Prior to the price declines, see the second below chart for lithium-ion battery prices, utilities were the only group that could afford and justify the huge capital expenditures.  With the recent price collapse of batteries, the solar market is expected to take a take off again.  This time it can do so because the costs are low enough to eliminate subsidies and generate rates of returns for the homeowner.
