Smart Vents - Smart Vents Can Even Out Temperature
As mentioned previously, in How is Electricity Used in U.S. Homes page, space cooling was the largest use of electricity at 13% and space heating was the 4th largest use of electricity at 9%, together that is 22%. Part of the problem of home heating and cooling is the heating or cooling in rooms that are not being used. The other part of heating and cooling of a house is the physical layout of the house relative to the rising and setting of the sun and prevailing winds.
Homes oriented lengthwise to the rising and setting sun, tend to have a warm half of a house and a cooler other half of a house. Smart vents can work in concert with a smart thermostat and even off the temperature in the house. This can be done with the vents opened and closed in various rooms to alter the pressure and thus the temperatures of the rooms. The vents have both thermometers and barometers to register the temperature and pressure of each room.
The smart vents work with your smart phone. The smart vents should have a tight integration with the smart thermostats. These vents obviate the need for temperature zoning. In large new houses, there are several HVAC units that will work together to heat and cool a home. A two zone system would, say, cool the second floor and allow air density to cool the first floor. In heating, the first floor would heat up and allow the lighter hot air flow upward into the second floor. The two operate more efficiently than a single zone system, but is more expensive. These smart vents would perform the same function of a two zone system.
